What stands out most about Matthew as a person and educator?
Both as a person and educator, Matthew stands out as both a leader and advocate. He leads through example by working with students and staff with a calming grace through any challenge. Whereas others tend to break composure and lose sight of dignity and decency through various challenges, Matthew maintains a gentle curiosity that is a reflection of his deep commitment to serving students and the community that is a part of their world.

I have witnessed Matthew connect with students to positively impact their outcomes on numerous occasions. This is a reflection of what might be one of his greatest strengths, which is his ability to relate to students of any background and to see through apparent struggles to the core of what makes them unique, and which stands to connect these students in the most positive and durable way to the world around them.
What strengths does Matthew bring when working with students or in challenging situations?
While his capacity to build connections with students and school communities is striking, another aspect of Matthew that compels me to seek out his consultation is his deep understanding of human growth and development and the various systems in which students must navigate, be they at the level of the school, district, region, state, or nation. He is able to form deep understandings of students, families, and what they must navigate with regards to these systems, in order for them to obtain optimal growth and success by any measure. Ultimately, Matthew is able to work with students, communities, and families to empower children and families to access what represents their fullest expression of who they are, regardless of the challenges they face.

Favorite memory, story or personal note you’d like to share:
As a friend, I’ve witnessed numerous occasions where Matthew reached out to connect with various individuals in various communities. On a recent trip to Moab, I was struck by Matthew’s curiosity in his engagement with the various peoples of our world. Whether a routine interaction with a clerk in a store or in strolling past a group of two young Native American men sitting outside a cafe, Matthew would interact with and develop genuine connections with anyone in his experience in the most natural and seemingly effortless fashion. I presume it is a reflection of his unconditional positive regard for humanity and his place in it, which I have come to conclude is a natural expression of his being. I am truly grateful to have Matthew as a friend for this and so many other reasons that make him unique and worth knowing on any level.

What stands out most about Matthew as a person and educator?
Matthew has an unwavering commitment to the whole child. In the special education setting, Matthew doesn't just focus on academics or compliance—he genuinely values the complete health and well-being of each student. He helps children navigate not only their educational journey but also their social-emotional growth, family dynamics, and confidence in the public education system. With Matthew, the student always comes first. This approach is rare, wonderful, and deeply needed in special education and everywhere.
How have you seen Matthew connect with or positively impact children?
I have always and only seen students grow academically and with confidence through their connections with Matthew. These gains aren't just about test scores or skill mastery—students develop genuine, strong relationships with him that fuel their growth. They thrive because of the way Matthew approaches their academic plan with intentionality and care, but equally important is how he relates to them on a human level. He meets them as people first, and that connection becomes a strong foundation for their academic and personal success.
What strengths does Matthew bring when working with students or in challenging situations?
Matthew brings a rare combination of strengths when working with students and navigating challenging situations. His intelligence allows him to problem-solve creatively and adapt his approach to meet each student's unique needs. What truly sets him apart is his ability to build relationships rooted in trust and genuine kindness. Students feel safe with Matthew because he demonstrates this tremendous commitment—to their academic progress, and to their wellbeing as individuals. In difficult moments, this foundation of trust is essential. Students are more willing to take risks, be vulnerable, and work through challenges when they know someone truly cares about them.
Why would you recommend Matthew to families or children in need of support?
I wholeheartedly recommend Matthew to any family or child in need of support because he is rare—truly one of the best at what he does. In education, it's special to find someone who combines deep expertise, genuine compassion, and dedication to the whole child. Matthew doesn't just provide support; he becomes an advocate and a trusted partner for families navigating complex educational systems. Families will experience peace of mind knowing that their child will be seen, valued, and supported with both intelligence and heart.
Favorite memory, story, or personal note you’d like to share:
One memory that perfectly captures who Matthew is involves Durin's Door, a lunchtime club he created at our school. The name is a reference to The Lord of the Rings, specifically the inscription above a door that, when translated, reads "Speak, friend, and enter." Matthew chose this name deliberately—because for him, all students are friends, and therefore all are welcome. In that simple choice of name lies everything Matthew believes: that every child belongs, that acceptance is unconditional, and that community is built on genuine welcome. Students who feel isolated, anxious, or on the margins find a safe space in Durin's Door. It isn’t just a club; it is a sanctuary Matthew created through his kindness and intentionality. That one gesture—naming it Durin's Door—tells you everything you need to know about Matthew’s committment for people.

He has a unique ability to understand the root causes of behavior and respond in a way that is both compassionate and productive. Beyond his work with students, Matt excels at collaborating with families. He communicates clearly, builds trust with parents and guardians, and consistently works to align everyone involved in support of the child’s success.

Favorite memory, story, or personal note you’d like to share:
I started this job on very short notice. Although I had been a learning specialist before COVID, I had spent the past several years at home raising my two young daughters. Coming back, I had a lot of big feelings. I was nervous about making mistakes and felt guilty about working full-time and not being with my three-year-old as much. Matt took the time to really talk with me. He made sure I had what I needed to be successful, but more importantly, he got to know me as a person. Anytime self-doubt crept in, he was there to encourage me. Beyond reminding me that I was doing a great job as both a teacher and a mom, he consistently emphasized the importance of being gentle with ourselves. We’ve had many meaningful conversations about mental health, managing the heavy workload teachers carry, and finding balance.
His support has made a real difference in my transition back to teaching, and I’m truly grateful for the way he shows up for both students and staff.

A Parent

As a parent, I really appreciated Matt's great communication, letting us know what happened on especially good or challenging days. He is a wonderful collaborator at IEP meetings, and clearly advocated for my daughter, even when it meant more work for him. He is open minded and has an uncanny ability to think outside the box in designing supports. His deep understanding of how others might perceive the world is so helpful with kids whose differences can separate them in various ways from their peers. He went above and beyond and made a lasting difference in my daughter's life. I highly recommend him to any parent looking for a genuine collaborator who cares about the long game. He's a gem!
